In this article, I'll dive deep into stack navigation using React Navigation, the most popular library for handling navigation in React Native apps.

Getting Started

Before we jump into the code, let's ensure that we have the necessary setup. If you haven't already, you need to install React Navigation and the required dependencies. This involves installing the core navigation library as well as additional packages for handling screens and safe areas.Next, I'll wrap the application in a NavigationContainer. This is a container component provided by React Navigation that manages the navigation tree and enables you to navigate between screens.

Basic Stack Navigation

A stack navigator provides a way for our app to transition between screens, with each new screen being placed on top of a stack. This means that when we navigate to a new screen, it is pushed onto the stack, and when we go back, it is popped off the stack.Let's create two simple screens: HomeScreen and DetailsScreen. In HomeScreen, I'll add a button that navigates to DetailsScreen. This demonstrates a basic transition from one screen to another.

Passing Parameters

Often, we'll need to pass data between screens. This can be done easily with stack navigation by passing parameters when navigating to a new screen.In the HomeScreen, I'll navigate to DetailsScreen while passing some parameters. The DetailsScreen can then retrieve these parameters and display them. This is useful for passing dynamic data such as item IDs or user input.

Customizing the Header

React Navigation provides robust customization options for headers. We can customize the header style and title for each screen. This includes changing the background color, text color, and font styles.We can apply default styles to all headers using the screenOptions prop, and we can customize individual screen headers using the options prop. This flexibility allows us to create a consistent and visually appealing navigation experience.
